Birding Expedition Uncovers Diverse Avifauna at Mt. Boribid, Philippines
On August 25, 2025, Gina Arche led a birding expedition at Mt. Boribid in Davao del Sur, Philippines. The 5-hour trip, which covered 1.8 kilometers of terrain, yielded 11 species of birds observed by Gina.
The expedition team had a notable sighting of the Philippine Cuckoo-Dove (Ducula cinerea), a species of dove found only in the Philippines. A total of three other fruit-dove species were observed, with the Yellow-breasted Fruit-Dove (Ptilinopus occipitalis) and the Coppersmith Barbet (Psilopogon haemacephalus) also making an appearance.
Gina also spotted various members of the crow and flycatcher families. The Philippine Bulbul (Hypsipetes nicobariensis) and the Warbling White-eye (Zosterops strenuus) were abundant, with the former seen three times and the latter eight times during the expedition.
Other notable sightings include the Philippine Coucal (Centropus viridis), the Lesser Coucal (Centropus bengalensis), the Brown Shrike (Lanius cristatus), the Philippine Jungle Crow (Corvus fasciolatus), the Turquoise Flycatcher (Eumyias thalassothele), and the Little Pied Flycatcher (Ficedula westermanni).
This brief expedition serves as an eye-opener for the diverse range of species found in the Philippines, and highlights the importance of continued conservation efforts for these unique and endangered avifaunas.
