Birds of Misamis Oriental: A Morning Survey
On August 25, 2025, a team of two bird enthusiasts embarked on a morning birding trip near the DAO Tree in Misamis Oriental, Philippines. The 1.5-hour excursion, covering a distance of approximately 3 kilometers, yielded a total of four recorded bird species.
Participants Jun Rey Jong Junior Yap and their companion successfully spotted three Yellow-breasted Fruit-Doves, a species known for its vibrant yellow plumage and distinctive fruit-eating habits. Other notable sightings included a pair of Brahminy Kites soaring overhead, their forked tails a giveaway of their raptor identity.
The survey also turned up a single sighting of the Philippine Yellow-faced Coppersmith Barbet, a colorful bird with striking facial markings. This charismatic species was once considered an endemic of the Philippines, adding to its allure among bird enthusiasts.
Lastly, observers recorded pairs of the Yellow-wattled Bulbul, their bright yellow faces and throat patches standing out amidst the lush foliage of their forest habitat.
As birding activities continue to highlight the rich biodiversity of Misamis Oriental, these findings contribute to a deeper understanding of the region's avifauna. Efforts to protect and preserve these ecosystems will be crucial in ensuring the long-term survival of these and other fascinating bird species.
