Campus Birdwatchers Spot Variety in UP Diliman
On a sunny morning in early August, a birding trip took place in the University of the Philippines Diliman campus. Led by Kierloyd Vince Schofield, the solo observer spent 1 hour and 43 minutes covering a 2-mile distance within the campus, spotting a total of 12 different bird species.
Among the birds seen were the common yet beautiful Zebra Dove, Black-crowned Night Heron, and Collared Kingfisher. These waterbirds were seen in the midst of 3 Collared Kingfishers and a Black-crowned Night Heron.
A few tree-dwelling birds also made an appearance: the Coppersmith Barbet and the Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker, while the Philippine Jungle Crow and Long-tailed Shrike foraged on the ground or nearby trees. Other species such as the Golden-bellied Gerygone and the Black-naped Oriole were also observed.
The observer also recorded sightings of several species more typically associated with urban gardens, including the White-breasted Woodswallow and the Pacific Swallow.
Finally, large numbers of the non-native Eurasian Tree Sparrow were seen throughout the campus.
