Bataan Bird Survey Uncovers Diverse Species at Sisiman View Deck
A recent birding trip to Sisiman View Deck in Bataan, Philippines, yielded an impressive count of 11 bird species, according to data provided by participant Keenan Ransome. The excursion, which took place on August 24, 2025, offered a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts to observe a variety of species in a relatively short period.
The observations were made at the Sisiman View Deck, a stationery location in the province of Bataan, where the participants spent three hours documenting the bird life. Their efforts revealed an impressive array of bird species, including the Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon), Zebra Dove, White-eared Brown-Dove, Gray-rumped Swiftlet, Brahminy Kite, White-breasted Woodswallow, Golden-headed Cisticola, Yellow-vented Bulbul, Pied Bushchat, Java Sparrow, and Eurasian Tree Sparrow.
Among the species seen was the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, whose numbers were estimated to be in the hundreds, with 300 individuals observed on the road and power lines. Participant Keenan Ransome noted that this might be a low estimate, suggesting the actual number could be much higher.
The sightings demonstrate the importance of the Philippines as a hub for avian diversity, with a wide range of species present in the region. The birding trip serves as a reminder of the need to continue documenting and conserving the country's rich bird life.
