Early Morning Birdlife in Brgy. Sto. Nino, Quezon City
On a recent early morning excursion in Brgy. Sto. Nino, Quezon City, Sherlyn Laguardia spent 1 hour and 30 minutes observing the local birdlife with fellow traveler. Over the course of the trip, they recorded a total of 9 bird species, covering a distance of approximately 1 kilometer.
Their findings included various species of common urban birds in the Philippines. Zebra Doves (4 individuals) were frequent sightings, with a pair of Golden-bellied Gerygones also spotted in the area. Their short trip allowed them a chance to see the Philippine Hanging-Parrot, which is an infrequent and somewhat rare visitor to urban areas.
Water-loving birds, or those that frequent such locations, included the Pacific Swallow with 5 sightings, while the Yellow-vented Bulbul was a dominant presence, being seen 17 times during the trip.
Rounding out the sightings were the Philippine Pied-Fantail and Asian Glossy Starling, with 3 and 4 individuals observed, respectively. Garden Sunbirds had a presence of 4 in the area and lastly, 44 Eurasian Tree Sparrows were spotted, the highest count of the trip.
