Birds of Lag-asan: A Glimpse into the Evening Landscape of Negros Occidental
On August 24, 2025, David Morrison embarked on an evening birding trip in Lag-asan, Bago City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. The trip, which lasted 51 minutes and covered a distance of 1.685 km, resulted in the sighting of 16 species of birds.
Among the species spotted were common birds such as the Spotted Dove, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, and Yellow-vented Bulbul. The visit of the Javan Pond-Heron was a notable highlight, with five birds observed in the area.
Other birds sighted during the trip included the Lesser Coucal, heard in the distance, and the Visayan Tailorbird and Oriental Skylark, both heard only. The trip also brought sightings of the waders Barred Rail and Barred Buttonquail, as well as the Paddyfield Pipit.
In addition to these sightings, the observers also spotted a variety of smaller birds, including the Striated Grassbird, Pacific Swallow, Garden Sunbird, and Chestnut Munia. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow, with 30 individuals observed, was the most abundant species of the trip.
The evening walk took place under bright conditions, accompanied by the participants' dogs.
