Birds Amidst the Morning Sun in Negros Occidental

Published: Thursday, January 30, 2025 at 9:02:09 AM Philippine Standard Time

On a bright and sunny morning, David Morrison embarked on a birding trip to Lag-asan, Bago City in Negros Occidental, Philippines. Accompanied by his dogs, the entire excursion lasted for one hour and two minutes, covering a distance of approximately 3.61 kilometers.

During the morning walk, Morrison spotted 17 different bird species, including pigeons and doves, possibly the Asian Pied Starling's competitor the 'Columba' genus pigeon/dove, as they are known to be found respectively within the area. The Philippine Coucal was identified by its head alone, suggesting its elusive nature. A Black-crowned Night Heron was witnessed flying out of a small canal, while an Eastern Cattle-Egret caught the attention with its distinct coloration - most were still white, but one was very orange and some were just starting to turn.

The observers also spotted several egrety species notably Striated Grassbirds singing in songs to possibly court, alongside many brown and yellow bulbul species like, the yellow-vented Bulbul in the local territory. A greater variety of starlings, i.e., Asian Glossy Starlings, was also witnessed alongside common Munias' ( Chestnut Munia ) which included one of the highest sighting counts (45). Furthermore, Eastern Negros ( Visayan Tailorbird)-type birds along other migrating Swallows of the region such as the Pacific Swallow were observed.
