Winter Birds Take Over the Sampanit Fish Ponds
On January 29, David Morrison spent 13 minutes walking along the Sampanit Fish Ponds in Bago City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. The overcast weather provided a perfect backdrop for observing a diverse range of bird species.
While exploring the area, Morrison spotted a total of 13 species, including the intriguing Barred Rail, which was seen four times. Other notable mentions include the Black-winged Stilt, with seven individuals observed, and the Whiskered Tern, a lone sighting among the waterbirds.
The waterbirds were plentiful, with the White-breasted Waterhen being the sole representative of its species. The Chinese Egret and Little Egrets were also identified, totaling three individuals. Striated Herons and Javan Pond-Herons were notable among the wading birds, while the Common Greenshank and Collared Kingfisher added to the mix.
Morrison also spotted a variety of terrestrial birds, including the Yellow-vented Bulbul, Chestnut Munia, and Eurasian Tree Sparrow. The 0.46 km route allowed for a comprehensive look at the bird life in the area, providing valuable insights into the region's avifauna.
By focusing on a single location, this brief but informative birding trip highlighted the importance of local conservation efforts and the diverse bird species that call this area home.
