On January 29, 2025, a birding enthusiast, EDP Liuag, ventured into Ilaya, San Pablo City in Laguna, Philippines. This morning birding trip, which lasted for 1 hour and 30 minutes, provided a unique opportunity to observe and record the diversity of bird species in the area.

Under overcast skies with a light drizzle, Liuag managed to spot a total of 11 bird species in the vicinity. The sightings began with a flock of Rock Pigeons (Feral Pigeon), numbering 15 individuals, which often inhabit urban areas.

Among the other birds observed was the Zebra Dove, a ground-dwelling species typically found in grasslands and open woods. A lone Gray-rumped Swiftlet and Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker also made appearances.

Fast-moving birds, such as the White-breasted Woodswallow, Pacific Swallow, and Garden Sunbird, were also recorded during the trip. The Yellow-vented Bulbul, Red-keeled Flowerpecker, and Chestnut Munia contributed to the diverse list, with counts of 1, 2, and 9 individuals, respectively.

Eurasian Tree Sparrows rounded out the observed species, with 4 birds spotted during the morning excursion. These observations provide valuable insights into the local bird fauna and the significance of urban areas in supporting avifaunal diversity.

While the drizzly conditions may have put a damper on the outing, Liuag's diligence allowed for an impressive tally of species to be recorded in this short period. This successful foray highlights the importance of continued bird monitoring in Laguna, a region that promises much for bird enthusiasts and conservationists alike.
