Birding in the Hills of Antique: Notable Sightings of Philippine Native Species
A recent birding trip in the hills of Antique, Philippines, yielded several notable sightings of native species by a team of four observers led by Geoffrey McMullan, Martjan Lammertink, and Vicky Burke. On January 28, 2025, the group spent 55 minutes observing birds in the area of Aningalan, above 1000 meters above sea level.
The trip report highlights the presence of three bird species. The team spotted two Philippine Nightjars (_Eurystomus orientalis_(Ceylon Nightjar))) in the area.
Vocal calls were a significant factor for some of the observed birds, with the group identifying a Negros Scops-Owl despite not visually spotting it. Listeners noted a descending call that was compared to a recording from Xeno Canto.
A relatively high number of Luzon Boobook (_Ninox philippensis_) were also observed by the team, with five birds spotted during the trip.
