Birding Delights at Bood Promontory and Eco Park
On January 9, 2025, Ana Gabrielle Alcantara embarked on a brief birding trip to Bood Promontory and Eco Park in Butuan, Philippines. Despite the limited duration of just 16 minutes, Alcantara managed to spot two fascinating bird species during her visit.
The first species to catch her attention was the Collared Kingfisher (Todiramphus chloris chloris). Unfortunately, it was only audible, with Alcantara reporting that she "heard only" this bird. Despite not getting a visual sighting, the call of the Collared Kingfisher is often a welcome sign of the bird's presence in the area.
The second species Alcantara recorded was the Garden Sunbird (Nectaria asiatica). Like the Collared Kingfisher, this bird was also heard only, with its melodic song filling the air. The Garden Sunbird is a common sight in urban gardens and parks, and its visit to the Bood Promontory and Eco Park was a delight for Alcantara.
Although Alcantara's trip was brief, her encounter with these two species serves as a reminder of the importance of conservation efforts in protecting the Philippines' unique avifauna. With over 600 bird species found in the country, it is essential to preserve and protect their habitats, ensuring that future generations can continue to enjoy and appreciate the beauty of these feathered creatures.
