Swiftlets Soar, Raptors and Songbirds Appear in Philippine Birding Trip
On January 9, 2025, a group of 10 bird enthusiasts embarked on a birding trip along the Marcos Highway in Tanay, Rizal, Philippines. During a two-minute stationary observation, the team spotted a diverse range of bird species, including swiftlets, raptors, and songbirds.
The highlight of the trip was the presence of three swiftlet species: Pygmy Swiftlet, Gray-rumped Swiftlet, and Ameline Swiftlet. The Pygmy Swiftlet, with its distinctive call, was seen in abundance, with 20 individuals counted. The other two species were less numerous, but still notable sightings for the team.
Raptors also made an appearance, with the Oriental Honey-buzzard soaring overhead. This large raptor, with its distinctive black-and-white plumage, is a common sight in the Philippines, but always a welcome addition to any birding trip.
The team also spotted six Rufous-crowned Bee-eaters, whose bright colors and acrobatic flight made them a joy to watch. A single Philippine Hanging-Parrot was seen, and two Garden Sunbirds added to the variety of species observed.
The team's enthusiasm for the birding trip was evident, with comments highlighting the excitement of spotting these birds. While the exact notes are not included, it's clear that the participants were thrilled to see these species in their natural habitat.
