Birding Bonanza in Valenzuela's Green Heart
On January 9, 2025, a solo birder, Jan Denn Arriba, embarked on a 2-hour, 28-minute adventure in Brgy. Tagalag, Valenzuela, discovering 17 bird species in the process.
The day's vigil started with a flock of 2 Zebra Doves making an early appearance, followed by a large group of 29 Eurasian Moorhens. The wetland area was also teeming with activity, with 4 Philippine Swamphens, 3 Black-headed Gulls, and 20 Whiskered Terns spotted. The bird enthusiast was thrilled to catch glimpses of 5 Little Grebes, 4 Yellow-biterns, and 11 Black-crowned Night Herons in the wetlands.
The morning also saw the appearance of various wading birds, including 1 Little Egret and 1 Medium Egret, as well as a majestic Purple Heron, which boasted a count of 18. The birds' songs and calls filled the air, punctuated by the occasional hoot of a 1 Black-crowned Night Heron.
Among the birds adding a pop of color to the scene were a pair of 2 Philippine Pygmy Woodpeckers and a flock of 5 Yellow-vented Bulbuls. A few flycatchers made an appearance, including 1 Common Kingfisher and 1 Collared Kingfisher.
As Jan Denn Arriba wrapped up his birding adventure, he was treated to the sight of 20 Eurasian Tree Sparrows flitting about, their brown and grey feathers a beautiful background against the lush green surroundings.
This birding trip provided a welcome respite from the urban bustle, offering a glimpse into the diverse and thriving avifauna of Valenzuela.
