Birding Bonanza in Tagpopongan: 19 Species in a Day's Observation
On January 8, 2025, Lea Walker embarked on a birding trip to Tagpopongan in Davao del Norte, Philippines, and returned with a remarkable list of 19 species. The day's excursion lasted for 2 hours and 10 minutes, and Walker was accompanied by fellow bird enthusiasts.
The trip kicked off with the sighting of the Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, followed by a flurry of dove species, including the White-eared Brown-Dove, which accounted for six of the total count. The Philippine Coucal and Ridgetop Swiftlet were also spotted early on.
The waterbirds were well-represented, with the White-breasted Waterhen emerging as a familiar sight, with four individuals counted. The Philippine Serpent-Eagle, a majestic raptor, was also sighted, soaring majestically in the skies.
The woodland birds took center stage, with the Coppersmith Barbet, Pied Triller, Black-naped Oriole, Black-naped Monarch, and the bulbuls, including the Philippine Bulbul and Yellow-vented Bulbul, showcasing their bright plumage and melodies.
The starlings and sunbirds were also prominent, with the Asian Glossy Starling and Coleto appearing in numbers. The Red-keeled Flowerpecker, Brown-throated Sunbird, Purple-throated Sunbird, and Garden Sunbird were notable sightings, adding to the diversity of the day's observations.
Rounding out the report, the Eurasian Tree Sparrow was spotted, making up a significant portion of the day's total count.
