Birds Galore at Villa Rosario Subdivision
On January 8, 2025, a lone birder, Kyle Carlsen, embarked on a 40-minute stationary birding trip in the Villa Rosario Subdivision in Iloilo, Philippines. The enthusiastic observer was rewarded with a diverse array of bird species, totaling six different species.
The observation list began with a majestic Zebra Dove (Geopelia striata), a common resident in the area. However, the real showstopper was the Gray-rumped Swiftlet (Collocalia spp.) flock, numbering a whopping 10 individuals. These small, insectivorous birds were likely attracted to the area's insect-rich environment.
Other notable sightings included 20 Barn Swallows (Hirundo rustica), possibly staging for their summer migration or simply taking advantage of the area's abundant food sources. Two Yellow-vented Bulbuls (Pycnonotus goiavier) were also spotted, adding a splash of vibrant yellow to the scene.
The Chestnut Munia (Lonchura atricapilla) flock, consisting of four individuals, was another highlight of the observation. These social birds were likely foraging for seeds and grains in the area. Rounding out the list were eight Eurasian Tree Sparrows (Passer montanus), adding a familiar touch to the mix.
Kyle Carlsen's bird-filled adventure served as a reminder of the importance of monitoring and appreciating the birdlife in urban areas like Villa Rosario Subdivision.
