Bird Bonanza at Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park
On January 8, 2025, a group of 7 enthusiasts embarked on a 5-hour birding adventure in the lush Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park, located in Lantapan, Bukidnon, Philippines. Led by Mace Hack, the team explored the area and recorded an impressive 39 species of birds, showcasing the park's incredible biodiversity.
The trip yielded a variety of bird species, including the Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, Yellow-breasted Fruit-Dove, Philippine Hawk-Cuckoo, and Ridgetop Swiftlet, which were spotted in the forest canopy. Waterbirds such as the Barred Rail and Plain Bush-hen were seen in the vicinity of water sources, while raptors like the Oriental Honey-buzzard and Pinsker's Hawk-Eagle soared overhead.
The team also spotted a range of arboreal birds, including the Brown-breasted Kingfisher, Collared Kingfisher, and Philippine Pygmy Woodpecker. The Mindanao Racquet-tail, with its striking racquet-like tail, was another highlight of the trip. The Black-and-cinnamon Fantail and Philippine Jungle Crow were also notable sightings.
Warblers and flycatchers were plentiful, with the Philippine Leaf Warbler, Warbling White-eye, and Turquoise Flycatcher making an appearance. The team also spotted a variety of songbirds, including the Elegant Tit, Pacific Swallow, and Barn Swallow.
The reports also included a large gathering of bulbuls, with 6 Philippine Bulbuls seen, as well as 40 Eyebrowed Thrushes, which dominated the counts. Other notable sightings included 20 Chestnut Munias, 6 White-cheeked Bullfinches, and 1 Paddyfield Pipit.
This successful expedition not only highlights the rich birdlife of Mount Kitanglad Range Natural Park but also underscores the importance of preserving these natural habitats for future generations.
