On January 8, 2025, Martti Siponen embarked on a thrilling birding adventure in the Pueblo de Oro Malvar Townscape, Calabarzon, PH. The 2-hour, 20-minute trip covered a distance of 2.5 kilometers, revealing an astonishing 24 species of birds.

As Martti traversed the urban landscape, he spotted the ubiquitous Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon), with eight individuals flitting about. The peaceful atmosphere was also home to three Spotted Doves, two Zebra Doves, and a lone Philippine Coucal, adding to the soundscape.

The trip wasn't all about songbirds, however. The arrival of the Gray-rumped Swiftlet in flocks of five hinted at the dynamic aerial landscape. Meanwhile, the Eastern Cattle-Egret, a bird often associated with rural areas, surprised Martti with its massive flock of 90 individuals.

Raptors made an appearance as well. The Eurasian Kestrel, a stately bird of prey, soared overhead, while the Brown-breasted Kingfisher, with its sleek plumage, was spotted in the shadows. Other species, like the White-breasted Woodswallow and the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, added a splash of color to the urban scene.

Birds of the hunt, such as the Brown Shrike, Long-tailed Shrike, and Pied Bushchat, joined the gathering, showcasing their striking plumage and behaviors. The ever-present Philippine Jungle Crow, with its distinctive call, kept a watchful eye on the proceedings.

The woodlands and wetlands were home to other species, including the Striated Grassbird, Philippine Bulbul, and Yellow-vented Bulbul, which provided a soothing accompaniment to the morning. Meanwhile, the Arctic Warbler and Chestnut Munia added a touch of rarity to the mix.

The latter half of the trip saw the Paddyfield Pipit making a brief appearance, flitting between the grasslands and wet areas. As the sun began to rise higher, the Eastern Yellow Wagtail and Scaly-breasted Munia joined the mix, completing the remarkable list of 24 species.

Martti's urban oasis birding adventure served as a testament to the surprising diversity of birdlife in even the most unexpected places.
