On January 8, 2025, a group of three bird enthusiasts, led by Kyle Carlsen, embarked on a 51-minute birding trip at the Iloilo City Esplanade. The trip yielded a total of 11 bird species, showcasing the area's unique avifauna.

The group observed 12 Rock Pigeons (Feral Pigeon) roosting in the area, likely attracted by food sources or shelter. These ubiquitous birds are often overlooked, but their numbers are significant indicators of urban ecosystems.

A rare sighting in the area was the Whiskered Tern, with a population count of four individuals. This small tern species is usually found near coastal areas, making their presence in the esplanade a notable finding.

The team also spotted five Golden-bellied Gerygones, a common resident species in the Philippines, known for their distinctive golden bellies. Their high-pitched calls filled the air, creating a soothing background melody.

Other notable sightings included the Black-crowned Night Heron (Eurasian), with four individuals observed, and the Little Egret, with one lone individual spotted. The Eurasian Tree Sparrow and the Yellow-vented Bulbul were also abundant, with counts of 10 individuals each.

In contrast, the group saw fewer numbers of birds that require more specialized habitats, such as the Gray-rumped Swiftlet and the Philippine Pied-Fantail. The Brown Shrike, with three individuals counted, is an erratic migrant to the area, adding to the trip's excitement.
