Birds Abound at Acacia Hotel's Green Oasis
On a recent early morning, Prayitno Goenarto embarked on a birding adventure from the comfort of his hotel room at the Acacia Hotel in Davao del Sur, Philippines. With binoculars in hand, he spent 57 minutes observing the lush green space near SM Lanang, netting an impressive 13 species of birds.
The expedition got off to a fascinating start with the sighting of a Red Junglefowl (Domestic type), its distinctive calls filling the air. The counts were impressive, with 10 Rock Pigeon (Feral Pigeon) and 7 Coppersmith Barbet making an appearance. The birdlife was further enhanced by 6 Yellow-vented Bulbul, 6 Asian Glossy Starling, and 4 Chestnut Munia, showcasing the area's biodiversity.
Other notable sightings included a pair of Ridgetop Swiftlet, a group of 7 Eurasian Tree Sparrow, and a lone Pacific Swallow. A Spotted Dove and a Zebra Dove were also spotted, their striking plumage a treat for the observer's eyes.
Prayitno's keen eye also picked out a rare sighting of a Blue Rock-Thrush, which he described as a female or immature individual with scaly underparts, adding to the excitement of the morning's birding adventure.
This birding trip was a testament to the importance of urban green spaces in supporting local wildlife, and we're thrilled to share this snapshot of Prayitno's encounter with these feathered friends.
