Rare Philippine Nightjar Spotted in Bohol's Raja Sikatuna National Park
On the evening of January 7, 2025, a team of four bird enthusiasts, led by John Rogers, embarked on a 20-minute stationary observation session at Raja Sikatuna National Park in Bohol, Philippines. The excursion yielded a total of one species, with a remarkable focus on a rare and elusive bird: the Philippine Nightjar (Caprimulgus manillensis manillensis).
The team was thrilled to spot a total of four individuals of this nocturnal species, a feat that requires patience, persistence, and knowledge of its habits. The Philippine Nightjar is listed as Vulnerable on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List, making its sighting all the more significant.
Raja Sikatuna National Park, a protected area in the region, provides a vital habitat for this species and other forms of biodiversity. The park's unique ecosystem supports a variety of bird life, including rare and endemic species.
John Rogers, the team leader, expressed excitement about the sighting, stating, "It was an incredible experience to observe these rare birds up close. We feel privileged to have had the opportunity to witness their behavior and habitat in such a pristine environment."
The successful observation serves as a testament to the importance of conservation efforts and protected areas like Raja Sikatuna National Park. By providing a safe haven for endangered species like the Philippine Nightjar, these protected areas play a critical role in preserving the region's biodiversity.
