31 Species in 3.5 Hours: A Birding Adventure in Bislig Lowlands
On January 7, 2025, Russel Orodio embarked on a thrilling birding adventure in the Bislig lowlands, specifically along PICOP Road 4 in Agusan del Sur, Philippines. Over the course of 3 hours and 37 minutes, he spotted an impressive 31 species of birds.
The day began with the sighting of several dove species, including the Philippine Cuckoo-Dove, Asian Emerald Dove, White-eared Brown-Dove, Amethyst Brown-Dove, and Pink-bellied Imperial-Pigeon. These birds are known for their unique plumage and are a treat for birdwatchers.
Other notable sightings included the Rufous Hornbill, Brown-breasted Kingfisher, and Rufous-lored Kingfisher, which are common sights in these lowland forests. The group of observers was thrilled to spot the Blue-crowned Racquet-tail, a bird known for its vibrant blue plumage and striking facial features.
The forest floor was bustling with activity, with species like the Guaiabero, Philippine Hanging-Parrot, Philippine Pitta, and Scarlet Minivet flitting about. Four species of bulbuls, including the Philippine Bulbul and Yellow-wattled Bulbul, were also spotted amidst the underbrush.
In the canopy, guests were treated to the majestic sight of the Philippine Jungle Crow, as well as the Rufous Paradise-Flycatcher and Short-crested Monarch.
In addition to these highlights, observers also recorded 10 other species, including the Stripe-sided Rhabdornis, Asian Glossy Starling, Red-keeled Flowerpecker, Metallic-winged Sunbird, and Naked-faced Spiderhunter.
