Birding Bonanza on the Apurawan Road
On January 7, 2025, a group of two enthusiastic birders, led by Rene Reyes, embarked on a thrilling adventure along the Napsan – Apurawan Road in Puerto Princesa, Palawan, Philippines. Over the course of an hour and 12 minutes, they covered a distance of approximately 0.65 miles, revealing a diverse array of bird species.
The team's efforts yielded an astonishing 10 species, with some notable highlights. Chief among these was the majestic Crested Goshawk, making its presence known with a solitary sighting. Another impressive find was the Palawan Hornbill, appearing in impressive numbers with three individual birds spotted.
Additionally, the group encountered a range of avian vocalists, including the melodious Red-headed Flameback and the clear-toned White-bellied Woodpecker. The Black-naped Oriole (Philippine), a stunning species with its striking plumage, also made an appearance, as did the Palawan Crow, which flew in with its distinctive call.
Other notable sightings included the Palawan Tit, which was seen in impressive numbers, with four individual birds recorded. The Rufous-tailed Tailorbird, with its distinctive tail, and the Palawan Fairy-bluebird, a species known for its vibrant colors, were also spotted. Finally, the group caught a glimpse of the agile Gray Wagtail, its gray flanks glistening in the sunlight.
This birding trip was a testament to the rich biodiversity of Palawan, with its unique combination of species found nowhere else on the planet. With its ease of accessibility and variety of habitats, the Napsan – Apurawan Road is a must-visit destination for any bird enthusiast.
