Bird Bonanza on Puerto Princesa's South Road
A two-person birding trip on January 7, 2025, turned out to be a thrilling adventure along the Puerto Princesa South Road in Palawan, Philippines. Led by Rene Reyes, the group spent about an hour and 23 minutes observing 20 species of birds.
The trip started with an encounter with a Thick-billed Green-Pigeon, a striking bird with its vibrant plumage. The group soon spotted a pair of Chestnut-breasted Malkohas, with their distinctive crest and bold markings.
As they continued their journey, they came across a Stork-billed Kingfisher, a Red-headed Flameback, and a majestic Blue-headed Racquet-tail. The latter was one of the highlights of the trip, with its striking blue head and racquet-like feathers on its tail.
Other notable sightings included a Bar-bellied Cuckooshrike, a Black-naped Oriole, and a Common Iora, whose female form was noted. The group also spotted Ashy Drongos, a Blue Paradise-Flycatcher, and a pair of Barn Swallows, including one with a Buff-bellied subspecies.
The trip also presented an opportunity to observe various species of bulbuls, including Black-headed and Ashy-fronted Bulbuls, which were abundant in the area. Other notables included a Pin-striped Tit-Babbler, an Ashy-headed Babbler, and a Common Hill Myna.
The group's attention was also drawn to a Gray-streaked Flycatcher, a Brown-throated Sunbird, and a female with a bright red eye, and a Palawan Sunbird. To round off the list, they spotted a Yellow-throated Leafbird and several others.
This birding trip on the Puerto Princesa South Road provided an exciting opportunity for the participants to spot a diverse range of species in their natural habitat.
