Spotting Splendor at Jariel's Peak
On January 7, 2025, a group of 10 enthusiastic birders embarked on a thrilling adventure at Jariel's Peak in Infanta, Quezon, Philippines. Led by respected guides Chris Lotz of Birding Ecotours and John Rutherford, the team spent an hour and 48 minutes exploring the area, covering a distance of 5.57 miles. Their reward was an impressive 15 species of birds, showcasing the region's incredible avifauna.
The group's highlights included the majestic Scale-feathered Malkoha, a rare and striking bird with its iridescent feathers. Three species of swiftlets, the Pygmy Swiftlet, Gray-rumped Swiftlet, and Pacific Swallow, caught the eye, their aerial acrobatics leaving onlookers wide-eyed. The Coppersmith Barbet, with its bright yellow face, was a particular delight, as were the elegant Elegant Tit and the charismatic Philippine Fairy-bluebird.
Other notable sightings included the Brown Shrike, whose striking brown plumage blended seamlessly into the underbrush, and the Lemon-throated Leaf Warbler, whose vibrant colors stood out amidst the verdant surroundings. The team also spotted a flurry of bulbuls, including the Philippine Bulbul, Yellow-vented Bulbul, and a host of swallows, including the Pacific Swallow.
Rounding out the list were several species of warblers, including the Bicolored Flowerpecker, and the Eurasian Tree Sparrow, whose familiar song punctuated the morning air.
This successful birding expedition demonstrates the rich diversity of birds that can be found in the Philippines, and the hard work and dedication of local guides and conservationists who are working to protect these incredible species. For any birder, this trip would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to connect with nature and revel in the simple joys of spotting splendor in the wild.
