On January 7, 2025, Gian Manuel Lopez embarked on a thrilling birding trip in Kalye Katinlo, El Nido, Palawan. Over the course of an hour and a half, he traversed 2.352 kilometers, spotting 12 species of birds.
The morning walk began with a sighting of Thick-billed Green-Pigeons, with three individuals spotted. The observer's keen eyes also caught a glimpse of the elusive Black-chinned Fruit-Dove, a treat for any bird enthusiast.
Raptors were also present, with a lone Crested Goshawk seen soaring overhead. This majestic bird is a common sight in the Philippines, but still a thrill to behold.
The trip was not all about raptors, however, as Gian also spotted a colorful array of birds, including Blue-tailed Bee-eaters, Palawan Drongo, and Black-headed Bulbuls. These birds added a splash of vibrancy to the morning's outing.
Other highlights of the trip included the Asian Glossy Starlings, Palawan Flowerpecker, Purple-throated Sunbird, Lovely Sunbird, and the striking White-bellied Munia. The Palawan Fairy-bluebird, a rare and sought-after species, was also spotted, making this trip a true birding adventure.
For Gian, this excursion was a chance to connect with nature and indulge his passion for birds. His dedication to recording these observations will help contribute to a greater understanding of the region's avifauna.
