Dusk Delights: A Birding Trip Uncovers Philippine Nightrays
On January 6, 2025, Russel Orodio embarked on a birding trip to an unnamed road in Rosario, Caraga, Philippines, and was rewarded with a fascinating glimpse into the region's nocturnal avifauna.
Under the cover of darkness, Russel encountered a total of six species, including two species of nightjars, a frogmouth, three species of owls, and a boobook. The Great Eared-Nightjar was a solitary find, while the Philippine Nightjar appeared in pairs, twice.
The Philippine Frogmouth and the three owl species - Giant Scops-Owl, Chocolate Boobook, and Mindanao Boobook - added to the evening's rich ornithological tapestry. Russel's observations spanned a distance of approximately 2.86 kilometers and lasted for 1 hour and 10 minutes.
Nocturnal birding requires patience and skill, and it's clear that Russel's expertise was rewarded with these impressive sightings. The "HO" notation next to some species suggests that Russel was fortunate enough to observe these birds up close, a testament to the rewards that can come with persistence and dedication to birding.
